Academic Success: Faculty & Staff Access, Creating Enivronment, Services, Employment

Within your residence hall you have access to academic assistance, support resources, faculty, staff and your peers.

Access to Faculty and Staff

Programs in the residence halls provide access to the university faculty. Residents are given additional opportunities to interact with faculty outside of the classroom.

The Resident Life staff provides a support network for resident students. The Resident Assistants (RAs) act as resource persons and peer advisors. Resident Directors (RDs) are trained in counseling and crisis management. Community Directors (CDs) provide leadership in developing a sense of community.

Creating Environment

You’ll find the residence hall environment alive with opportunities for learning, socializing and personal growth. To create an environment conducive to the academic success of students we provide monitored study rooms, computer labs and classrooms in the residence halls. Quiet hours, usually beginning at 10pm on weeknights, and 24-hour courtesy hours, when residents immediately comply with requests for quiet, help you to be more successful.

Services

We help you to succeed by providing academic support services. We provide a Math Success Program whose peer “coaches” can help you with homework and exam preparation; review sessions in math to help you at mid-term and final time; Ethernet connections in every room, and wireless connection in many common areas, which provide access to the Campus Data Network, the World Wide Web and the Internet; and workshops on stress management, test taking and personal development presented by RAs with faculty and staff support.

On Campus Employment

Researchers have found that working up to 20 hours a week, particularly in an on-campus job, positively correlates with grade point average and student persistence. Many students find it necessary and practical to find a part-time job during their college career. Extra money and experience are benefits of part-time work.
