Fire Safety Reminders

If you hear your building’s fire alarm:

    • Immediately exit the building
    • Always assume an emergency, never assume a false alarm
    • Use stairs, not elevators
    • Do not open door if knob is warm to the touch; stay in room and call 911
    • Crawl on floor (where air is fresher) if you encounter smoke

If you smell smoke or see smoke or fire:

    • Pull the nearest building alarm
    • Close your room door
    • Safely exit the building
    • Call 911
    • Never attempt to fight or put out a fire
    • Tell staff or fire authorities exact location of fire or smoke

If you get trapped by fire or smoke:

    • Call 911 and report that you are trapped
    • Keep the doors closed
    • Hang an object out the window to notify rescuers of your location
    • Do not jump, the Fire Department will rescue you

What you should do today:

    • Read emergency/evacuation procedures posted in your room
    • Know locations of exit stairwells and doors
    • Plan more than one exit route

Fire Safety Information
For Residents Who Require Evacuation Assistance
Residents with limited mobility, disabilities, or injuries (such as a broken leg), and who therefore may require evacuation assistance are responsible to notify their service desk to be placed on the “Evacuation Assistance List.”

Your name, room number, and reason assistance may be required, will be included on the list which will be given to the fire department in an emergency. Assisting you and others who cannot evacuate is a first priority for responding fire department personnel.

If at some point you no longer require evacuation assistance, please notify the Service Desk to have your name removed so that fire department personnel will not look for you and can focus their efforts where most needed.

  • In the event of a fire or fire alarm, evacuate to the outside if you are able to, are on the ground floor, and have an unobstructed route.
  • Do not use the elevator. It may not respond or it may shut down in a fire, leaving you trapped.
    • You know your abilities and limitations best. You also know that attempts by other residents to assist you or carry you down stairs may injure you or them. Make your decisions to accept or refuse assistance accordingly. Should you elect to remain inside, request that others notify emergency personnel of your whereabouts once they are outside.

  • If you are not able to exit directly to the exterior, move inside an exit stairwell, to a stairwell landing, and stay there. Exit stairwells are intended to keep out smoke and fire and serve as a primary area of refuge. Emergency personnel will check stairwells for individuals who need assistance.
  • If you are not able to exit to the building exterior or to an exit stairwell, remain in your room with the bedroom door closed.
  • Call 911 from your room phone. Even though your name may be listed on the “Evacuation Assistance List” retained at the Service Desk, call 911 to very your location with them and confirm that you are present in the building awaiting assistance.

Early Warning System

The campus Early Warning System is designed to provide instant notification to students, faculty and staff of imminent dangerous conditions. In an emergency, sirens around campus will sound continuously for at least three minutes.

If you ever hear the Early Warning siren:

  • If in your residence hall or apartment, stay inside/in your room and seek information from the sources below.
  • If outdoors, seek shelter inside the closest building.

Instructions for responding to an emergency should be learned by checking:

    • WMUC 88.1 FM
    • Comcast Cable Channel 76 (Terp TV)
    • X-5-SNOW or (301) 405-7669 (recorded message)

When danger has passed, a single 30-second siren blast will sound.

Family members can obtain information about an emergency by visiting www.umd.edu or calling 301-405-7669
