Oakland Hall & Denton Community Renovations

Oakland Hall

Beginning in the fall of 2011, Oakland Hall, the University of Maryland’s newest nine floor undergraduate residence hall, will be home to more than 700 UM students. Oakland Hall will be located in the north campus residence hall community adjacent to Easton Hall, the Denton Dining Hall, and the Center for Young Children (view site map).

The highly anticipated building will be the first new campus residence hall built since the New Leonardtown apartments opened in 1982 and the first new North Campus residence hall since La Plata Hall opened in 1968. In size, Oakland will be twice as large as any existing North Campus high rise hall.

The building has been designed to offer a balance of privacy and opportunities for community interaction. Each floor will house three wings of about 36 students living in four person suites
(view floor plans).

Features and amenities of Oakland Hall will include:

  • Most student rooms in two bedroom suites with four students sharing a bathroom
  • Each bedroom’s design has a location for a personal microwave and five cubic-foot refrigerator
  • Laundry facilities on every floor
  • Two study and lounge facilities on every floor
  • A 24-hour service desk
  • Air conditioning
  • Dedicated recycling and trash rooms on every floor
  • Inside storage for bikes
  • Centrally located meeting spaces
  • Planned LEED Gold Certification as a “green” building, which will include a long list of sustainable and energy-efficient design features
