Fall 2013 Move-In
Packing for Move-in

Your room has a regular twin bed and (36" x 75" x 6" mattress), four-drawer dresser, desk with drawer and shelf, and desk chair for each student. The room also has window blinds, closet space, smoke alarm, fire suppression sprinkler, and overhead light. Storage space is limited to the upper shelf and floor inside the closet(s) and under the beds.

Please do not bring more belongings than will fit in your dresser, on top of your dresser and desk, in about two to three feet of closet space, and under part of one bed. You may read more and get questions answered regarding triple and quad rooms.

You will have your own data line and cable jack. You must bring your own Windows-compatible laptop or PC or Apple Macintosh computer and twisted pair CAT 5 Ethernet cable (14' or longer). You and your roommate(s) will share one phone line with voicemail.

There are no carpeted rooms in the Cambridge, Denton, Ellicott or North Hill communities (with the exception of Anne Arundel and St. Mary's halls) or in Cecil Hall. For most rooms, a 10' x 12' carpet is recommended. All rooms are carpeted in the South Hill residence halls and Leonardtown and St. Mary's apartments.

Last-Minute Packing Suggestions
  • Pack belongings in boxes, totes, and bags, not loose
  • Bring wheeled luggage carriers or a lightweight hand truck
  • Bring plastic and umbrellas to cover your belongings in the event of rain
  • Bring an extra set of car keys, in case yours get locked inside the car
  • Wear comfortable clothes and shoes
  • Bring a cooler with bottled water, soft drinks, and snacks

We'll provide several wheeled carts for moving belongings, but the wait can be long, so we encourage you to bring your own hand truck or dolly. Temperatures in the 90s and high humidity are common in College Park, Maryland late August.

Packages and Mail

Belongings and online purchases shipped by a recognized carrier (USPS, FedEx, UPS, DHL) must arrive at your check-in desk only after you have arrived for move-in, due to limited holding space. Make sure you arrive before your deliveries do, then please claim them the same day they arrive.
