All of our residence hall laundry rooms are equipped with front loading, Energy Star qualified washers and energy efficient dryers. Based on the washer manufacturer's specifications, the University has cut water consumption for laundry in half with these washers – which amounts to a savings of approximately 2.5 million gallons of water a year. Additionally, these washers have larger baskets than our old machines and remove more water during the spin cycle, thus reducing dry time.
Each wash cycle currently costs $1.50, while each dry cycle costs only $1.25 per load.
All laundry rooms accept coins and Terrapin Express via your UM Student ID card for use of the washers and dryers. If you do not already have a Terrapin Express account, please visit Terrapin Express to deposit money online to your account so you can avoid the hassle of carrying quarters with you to do your laundry.
Cut Back on Detergent in the Washers
Remember to use no more than ¼ cup of liquid or 2 oz. of dry detergent.
With less water, it's important to use less detergent. Too much detergent won't rinse clean in a normal wash cycle and can overflow and even damage the washer.
Empty Pockets Before You Wash
Please empty the pockets of your clothing before loading the washing machine. Bobby pins, coins, and other hard objects can damage or disable washing machines.
Washer Doors Lock During Cycle
Please do not pull or attempt to open the washer doors after the cycle has started and the "door locked" light is lit on the control panel.
Coming Soon - Web Monitoring
We are putting the finishing touches on a web-based laundry monitoring software program that permits you, if you're interested in using it, to remotely check on laundry machine availability, reserve machines, and receive notifications when your laundry is done. More information about this exciting enhancement will be coming soon.
