Fall 2012 Housing Outlook Print Page

This semester started with almost 12,000 students living in the residence halls and University-affiliated Courtyards and South Campus Commons, which are apartment communities for students in their third and fourth year of college.

Residence hall housing is allocated in the following order:

  • New Freshman students
  • Returning Residents in their second year of college
  • Returning Residents in their third year of college
  • Returning Residents in their fourth year of college
  • Other Applicants including New Transfers, Off-Campus Students and Graduate Students

  • Two of every three full-time undergraduate students are living within walking or biking distance of their classes. These students are living in residence halls, fraternity and sorority chapter houses, The Courtyards and South Campus Commons apartment communities, commercial apartment complexes, rented houses, and rooms in private homes.

What does this mean for Fall 2012?

With the opening of Oakland Hall in Fall 2011, Resident Life's best estimate is that for Fall 2012, we will once again be able to house more students than in the previous four years.

All current first-year students in residence halls in good standing that meet the March 30 deadline will be able to secure housing for their second year, and will be invited to participate in Room Selection 2012.

Resident Life predicts that all current second-year students in good standing that meet the March 30 deadline will be able to secure housing for their third year, and will be invited to participate in Room Selection 2012. Current second-year students living in residence halls during the Spring 2012 semester will also still have the highest priority for new leases that become available at The Courtyards and South Campus Commons for 2012-2013.

For the 2012-2013 academic year, current third-year students in good standing will now be subject to the housing lottery to determine if they will be eligible to secure housing as "rising seniors" in residence halls.

While housing is not guaranteed, it is projected that most "rising seniors" will be able to secure housing for Fall 2012, with notifications happening as early as April 4. Current third-year students may also apply to lease at The Courtyards or South Campus Commons, but will not have priority for available leases and will not be eligible to be pulled in by current South Campus Commons or Courtyards residents.

    A Note about Good Standing

RHA legislation regarding status for students with multiple probations or A-level violations during the 2011-2012 academic year will be implemented.  Such students will be placed at the end of their housing commitment group for 2012-2013.  All students affected will be notified on April 3, 2012, prior to Room Selection 2012.
