Housing Commitments Policy
The following is the order in which available spaces in the on-campus residence halls at the University of Maryland are allocated for any given Fall semester. This policy was established in December 2000, and appears below as last amended (December 2001) by action of the Residence Halls Association and the Department of Resident Life.

Housing Commitment Groups for Fall 2013 and Beyond
| 1st | New Freshmen for a Fall semester who meet the University's annual May 1 housing and admissions deadline. |
| 2nd | Returning Residents for a Fall semester for whom the previous Spring was their first or second semester of enrollment at any college or university and at least their first semester in University of Maryland, College Park residence halls (also includes returners from Study Abroad, approved co-ops, student teaching, and medical absences). |
| 3rd | Returning Residents for a Fall semester for whom the previous Spring was their third or fourth semester of enrollment at any college or university and at least their first semester in University of Maryland, College Park residence halls (also includes returners from Study Abroad, approved co-ops, student teaching, and medical absences). |
| 4th | Students coming to the University of Maryland, College Park from other colleges and universities for one year or one semester through a Study Abroad or approved exchange program. |
| 5th | Returning Residents for a Fall semester for whom the previous Spring was their fifth or sixth semester of enrollment at any college or university and at least their first semester in University of Maryland, College Park residence halls (also includes returners from Study Abroad, approved co-ops, student teaching, and medical absences). |
| 6th | Returning Residents for a Fall semester for whom the previous Spring was their seventh or more semester of enrollment at any college or university and at least their first semester in University of Maryland, College Park residence halls (also includes returners from Study Abroad, approved co-ops, student teaching, and medical absences). |
| 7th | Returning Residents for a Fall semester who drop from Commitment groupings 2, 3, 5 and 6 above because they:

Spring semester residents who miss a Room Selection deadline but ask to return to residence halls for Fall semester. New Freshmen for Fall who sign up for housing and/or confirm their enrollment after the May 1 deadline. |

Spring residents seeking Fall housing and not in good financial standing as of March 20 or any date thereafter
