Pandemic Flu (Continued)
The University of Maryland community will be informed that the campus is closing through the following means:
- The University's warning system (sirens) will sound across campus
- Announcements at the web sites www.umd.edu/emergencypreparedness/pandemic_flu and www.umd.edu
- Voice mail and electronic mail
- Announcements on Terp TV and at WMUC 88.1 FM radio and 1640 AM radio
- Signs by Resident Life and Dining Services at their facilities and postings at their web sites
- Person-to-person spread of the news
- Local radio and television news and other media outlets
Residence hall students should try to avoid flu and flu-like symptoms by understanding and practicing sound flu-prevention hygiene:
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand cleaner
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
- Cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve if you don't have a tissue
- Put used tissues in a receptacle
- Don't share the same eating utensils, dishware, drinks, cigarettes, etc.
- Stay at home if you are sick and seek medical attention
- Avoid kissing or hugging when you or others are sick
Residence hall students should keep on hand:
- Supplies of drinking water and non-perishable foods, knowing that student service units including Dining Services and Resident Life will begin the process of shutting down their operations
- Cash (ATMs and credit cards may not be usable if land lines are flooded by high demand)
- First aid items and battery-operated AM radio (checklists are at Be Prepared: What To Keep On Hand)
- All important documents (licenses, account statements, passports), medications and all other valuables (clothing, textbooks and papers, laptop or PC) you would need or want to have during an extended closing of several weeks or months
Once the campus closing is announced, Shuttle-UM buses will not operate regular routes but will try to provide limited service to major transportation hubs: BWI airport and the New Carrollton Metro Station with connections to Amtrak, MARC train, and, by way of Metro, Virginia Railway Express (VRE), Union Station, and Reagan National Airport.
