Dr. Clement’s Message
To the UM Student Community:
The University of Maryland is a rigorous academic environment that challenges you to be your best – to learn and grow. We are a caring and supportive community, as well. We know that pursuing a college education can seem overwhelming at times. That is particularly true at this time of year – when exams are looming, assignments are due, relationships may be strained, special events are taking place, and there is a growing need to balance work, study, family and social relationships.
As a result of the stress you may be experiencing, we want you to be particularly aware of your concerns and feelings, and those of your friends and others around you. We want to make sure you know about the myriad of resources available to you on campus to help you manage any of your concerns or feelings and those of your friends.
We encourage you to take advantage of some of the following resources:
- Consult the Counseling Center, Shoemaker Building, 301.314.7651. They are open from 9:00 am - 9:00 pm, Monday-Thursday and 9:00 am-5:00 pm on Fridays. Counselors are on call for emergencies during the weekend hours.
- Make an appointment with the Mental Health Service, University Health Center, 301.314.8106. The Mental Health Service is open 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday – Friday and 11:00 am – 3:00 pm on Saturdays. A 24-hour Nurse line is available at 301.314.9386.
- Seek counsel from the University Chaplains, Memorial Chapel, 301.405.8448 or 301.405.8450
- Get assistance from Resident Life staff. Contact your RA, the RA on duty, or your community office, 301.314.7343.
- Share your concerns with your family, your parents, or your siblings
- Talk to your friends, your neighbors, your roommates or your classmates
If you are feeling strained, take some steps to take care of yourself and others. Seek out the resources we have on campus and resources you have at home.
Above all, know that no problem is unsolvable, and that the university is here to help you.
Sincerely,
Linda Clement
