South Campus Commons Building #7 Print Page

Construction Updates
December 4, 2008

Dear South Campus Commons Residents:

We are writing to provide an update on the South Campus Commons Building 7 construction taking place next to Building 6 and the Mowatt Lane parking garage. As you have likely noticed, the building is progressing quickly! Already the foundation, most utility infrastructure and the terrace level columns and beams have been completed. Work on the first level is in progress. By the time you leave for winter break, you’ll likely see the second level starting to take shape as well as see the tower crane installed to build the higher levels.

Whiting-Turner Construction, the general contractor for the project, continues to be on schedule and is working diligently to make sure the building opens in January 2010 as planned. Work hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (work may continue after 3:30 p.m. if needed to meet the schedule). Work takes place on most Saturdays to make up for weather delays during the week. Noise sensitive activities are restricted to starting at 7:00 a.m Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. on Saturdays, and 9:00 a.m. on Sundays.

We appreciate your tolerance and patience with the noise and dust as the work progresses. Remember, use caution when driving or walking in the construction area, especially at the end of the semester when move out may increase traffic around the site. If you should have any questions about the project, please do not hesitate to contact us via the South Campus Commons Management Office at (301) 314-2499 or via email at office@southcampuscommons.com. We would be happy to talk with you and answer your questions.

Dear South Campus Commons Residents:

Welcome back! As you may recall from last Spring, the Board of Regents approved another Public Private Partnership student housing project. This new apartment building, to be managed by Capstone Management in partnership with Resident Life, is being constructed near South Campus Commons 6 and across from the Mowatt Lane Garage. Work began on the site late this summer and will continue until it is completed and ready for occupancy in January 2010.

As with past construction projects around the residence halls, the site and surrounding area will be busy with construction traffic, noise and dust. The construction site has been fenced off and you should not attempt to enter that area at any time. Please use caution when driving or walking in this area. For your safety, please walk on the sidewalks and not in the roadway. We acknowledge that students in building 6 whose rooms face the site will be most affected by vehicles, noise and dust, and we appreciate those students and their patience and understanding.

Construction work hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (work may continue after 3:30 p.m. in order to meet the schedule). Weekend work may take place as needed to remain on schedule. Noise sensitive activities are restricted to starting at 7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. on Saturdays, and 9:00 a.m. on Sundays. As with our other construction projects, no work will be done during final exam periods.

Building 7 will be 8 stories tall, plus a terrace (basement) level. There will be 101 apartments containing spaces for 370 residents. The building is designed to achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification as designated by the US Green Building Council. Features include reduced energy usage, reduced water usage, and recycled construction materials. More information about LEED certification can be found at the US Green Building Council’s web site: http://www.usgbc.org.

We appreciate your tolerance and patience with the noise and dust as the work progresses. We will be having an informational forum for the SCC and South Hill community on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. in the SCC 5 Seminar Room. Please join us to learn more about the project.

If you should have any questions about the project, please do not hesitate to contact us via the South Campus Commons Management Office at (301) 314-2499 or email at office@southcampuscommons.com. We would be happy to talk with you and answer your questions.

Sincerely,

The South Campus Commons Team & The South Campus Resident Life Staff

Dear South Campus Commons Residents:

We hope you are having a wonderful summer. More than likely you have noticed that Lot U4 (next to the Mowatt Parking Garage) has been fenced. As many of you are aware, we will be adding a seventh building to our South Campus Commons community. This new building will be located where Lot U7 (parking lot adjacent to south side of South Campus Commons Building 6) is currently located. Construction for South Campus Commons Building 7 will start on Monday, July 7, 2008.

There is work scheduled to be completed in and around South Campus Commons. Lot U4 was fenced for construction staging on June 16, 2008. Lot U7 will be fenced in late June for construction. Between July 7th and August 24th, Preinkert Drive will have lane closures as needed to complete utility line moves. Work hours on this project shall be Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (work may continue after 3:30 p.m. in order to meet the schedule). Noise sensitive activities are restricted to 7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. on Saturdays, and 9:00 a.m. on Sundays. Construction will be complete in January 2010.

We appreciate your tolerance and patience with the noise and dust as the work progresses. We will be having an informational forum for the SCC community on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. in the SCC 5 Seminar Room. Please join us to learn more about the project.

If you should have any questions about the project, please do not hesitate to contact us via the South Campus Commons Management Office at (301) 314-2499 or email at office@southcampuscommons.com. We would be happy to talk with you and answer your questions.

Sincerely,

The South Campus Commons Team
