Construction began on South Campus Commons Building #7 in July 2008. Scheduled to open in January 2010, Building 7 will house 368 residents in apartments similar to those in buildings 5 and 6. Additionally, Building 7 will have attributes to make it environmentally friendly. The project team for Building 7 is pursuing LEED Silver certification for the project. If the building achieves this designation, it will be the first building on the College Park campus to do so.

Inconveniences Caused by Construction Activity

As with any large construction project, there will be inconveniences for many of the students and staff members who live, walk and park in the areas near Mowatt Lane garage and SCC Building 6.

Detailed planning has included many ways to minimize inconveniences to residents and passersby. Despite the careful planning, persons in the vicinity of the construction site should expect the following during most or all of the construction period:

  • Construction fences will encircle the area currently parking lot U7 and U4.
  • Some lane closures will occur on Prienkert Drive.
  • Construction traffic will use Knox Road, Guildford Drive, Mowatt Lane and Prienkert Drive.
  • Residents of SCC Building 5 & 6 will be inconvenienced by construction activity noise, truck traffic, dust, pedestrian paths disrupted by fencing, etc...
  • The worst of the inconveniences will be experienced by residents whose windows look out over Lehigh Road.
  • Disruptions While Classes are in Session

As the semester begins and work crews are coming onto the site every weekday and some Saturdays, residents will experience some continuing disruptions. For example, having to walk around the fenced area may make it more difficult to reach Knox Road. There is also likely to be noise and dust on a regular basis.

On weekday mornings, construction crews may be arriving for work before 8:00am and noise from their backhoes, bulldozers and trucks can be expected as early as 8:00am. The patience and understanding of all who live in and walk through the South Campus Commons Community will be appreciated.

Construction vehicles will occasionally cause delays for drivers trying to access Susquehanna Hall, the South Campus Dining Hall and the South Campus Commons buildings via Lehigh Road and/or Prienkert Drive.
