100% Wireless Coverage in Residence Halls by Fall 2008
Throughout 2007-2008, wireless service is being extended from selected study lounges to all residence hall areas, including student bedrooms. This service is being delivered through access points installed in residence hall corridors and in the common areas of apartments and suites in the South Campus, The Courtyards and South Campus Commons communities. Installations will be completed in phases ending by fall 2008.
As of November 2007, 100% wireless coverage has been completed in all residence halls which includes North Campus, North Hill, South Hill and Leonardtown.
Installation has also been completed in the 14 fraternity row Greek Houses and in all Commons buildings. Work in the Courtyard apartments is in progress and will be done very soon.

Free and Unlimited Local Calls from Phone Lines in Student Rooms
Students living in residence halls, The Courtyards and South Campus Commons place free and unlimited local calls from the University telephone line in their room, simply by dialing 9, then a 10-digit local phone number.
Computer Purchasing Program
Selected Apple Computer, Inc. Macintosh and Windows-based computers can be purchased at specially reduced prices. All machines are pre-configured for easy connectivity and use, with security software and other important utilities and applications pre-installed. Please click here for more information. |

Students living in residence halls, The Courtyards and South Campus Commons have separate and personal wired access to the University network via 10Mbps Ethernet connections. Wired networking services in student rooms will remain and be unchanged.
One Phone Line Per Room
Effective Fall 2007, there is one University land line in each single, double and triple bedroom within the residence halls (and two land lines in each quad bedroom).
You are strongly encouraged to use your in-room phone line, even if you anticipate using a cellular phone for most of your calls. The University telecommunications package includes many features, many of them very attractive to cellular phone users:
- Free and unlimited local calls (no need to charge these against one’s cell minutes)
- 911 calls received by University of Maryland Police
- Voice mail (shared by roommates)
- Calls accepted from anywhere in the world
- Free, unlimited campus dialing
- Conference calling, call transferring, last number redial
- Free maintenance, line repairs
Roommates should discuss in advance which person will contribute the phone set to their room’s set-up. Roommates can begin using University phone services by plugging the phone set (still an analog touch-tone phone with a standard plug and line cord) into the voice port in the wall jack in their bedroom in order to receive dial tone.
Click here to view information roommates will need to set up their shared voice mail (single voice mail log-in or password and single voice mailbox). This same site is used to register your computer, gaming console or PDA for access to the campus network.
Students’ widespread use of cellular phones made it possible to pursue this change. Residence hall students had been paying $70 per semester to have a personal phone line. Effective Fall 2007, a separate “telecom fee” of $70 per semester no longer appears on student accounts, and telecommunications fees (somewhat lower for all students because fewer phone lines are in use) are included within the residence hall housing fee.
Options for Long-Distance Calling
Options for placing and paying for international, long-distance and toll calls of any type from phones in students’ rooms now include one’s cellular phone, pre-paid calling cards and one’s telephone credit card. Because of low demand from students, the University no longer offers a toll calling service through PAETEC or other external vendor.
