Reduce Reuse Recycle
It all comes back to you!

Campus Goal
The University of Maryland has set a long-term goal of recycling 35% of the campus' solid waste. To achieve this goal, all members of the campus community must play a part. From the students in the halls who recycle cans and bottles to the staff who work in the facilities across campus, each of us have an important role to play in achieving this goal.

Why recycle?
There are three primary reasons why recycling makes good sense. It saves energy, conserves natural resources, and helps protect the environment.

  • Recycling saves energy. For example, making new aluminum cans from recycled aluminum uses 95% less energy than the same process using raw materials.
  • Recycling conserves natural resources. This is especially true when we recycle metal and paper.
  • Recycling helps protect the environment. By reducing the amount of waste we generate, we help minimize the threat posed by harmful substances within the waste stream. Recycling also reduces the volume of waste that must be incinerated or land filled.

What can I recycle? Where are the recycling containers? Resources & Tips

What can I recycle?
You can recycle newspaper and mixed paper, glass bottles and jars, aluminum cans, steel cans, and plastic containers with a 1 or 2 on the bottom.

Where are the recycling containers in each residence hall?
Traditional Residence Halls: Recycling containers mixed paper and bottles/cans are located in the laundry rooms, floor lounges, elevator lobbies and first floor building lobbies. Recycling containers for newspaper are only available in the building lobbies and some first floor study lounges.

Suites and Apartments: Exterior green recycling containers for bottles/cans are located next to each of the trash dumpsters in the community. Containers for mixed paper and newspaper are available in the Leonardtown Community Center, Annapolis Hall and the Harford Hall Service area. South Campus Commons has recycling rooms in the follwing locations:

Building 1: 1116 Building 2: 2117 Building 3: 3015
Building 4: 4100 Building 5: 5114 Building 6: 6114

Courtyard residents can find recycling containers adjacent to the dumpster.

Paper
Mixed paper and newspaper should be taken to the designated recycling blue bins in lobbies/lounges/community centers. Staples/paper clips do not have to be removed from paper.

  • Newspaper
  • Newsprint Catalogs
  • Mixed paper: White or assorted colors of paper, stationary/letterhead paper, copier paper, computer paper, notebook/tablet paper, graph paper, calendar and scrap paper, carbonless forms, white and kraft-envelopes, Post-it notes, glossy paper, magazines, newspaper inserts, paper board (cereal box, paperclip box)

Cardboard Boxes
During Fall Opening, white dumpsters for recycling of corrugated cardboard are available in all residence hall communities. All trash, packing materials should be removed prior to recycling the cardboard containers. Only corrugated cardboard should be recycled. Containers such as shoe boxes, carpet rolls should not be placed in this dumpster.

Bottles and Cans: Plastic, metal and glass are recycled together into the same container!

Plastic Containers
Plastic containers should be rinsed. They can be identified by the number on the bottom of the container.

Type 1 - PETE Polyethylene Terephthalate
• Soda & water containers, some waterproof packaging

Type 2 - HDPE High-Density Polyethylene
• milk, juice, cooking oil, detergent & shampoo bottles

Glass Containers
Food and beverage containers only. Please rinse the container and discard lids from glass containers prior to placing them in the recycling bin. Glass bottles must not be mixed with other types of glass such as windows, light bulbs, mirrors, glass tableware or Pyrex. Ceramics contaminate glass and are difficult to sort out.

Metal Containers
Aluminum, bimetal and steel cans can be recycled. Cans should be rinsed clean.

  • Aluminum cans
  • Steel cans
  • Bimetal (tin) cans

Non-Recyclable Materials
Please place in the trash!

  • Blueprints
  • Aluminum foil
  • Soiled or wet paper
  • Pizza boxes
  • Pressboard or linerboard
  • Paper bags
  • Carbon paper

Resources & Tips

additional tips...

  • Use, and encourage others to use the recycling containers available in your building and community.
  • Do not put plastic or paper bags in the recycling containers that were used to transport the recyclables from one’s room, suite or apartment to the recycling container.
  • Use the recycling containers only for their intended use. Do not use the containers for trash or other recyclables not specifically listed on the container.
  • Minimize your use of disposable containers. Purchase products with less packaging or that are packaged in recyclable or reusable containers.
  • When in the Dining Hall, limit your use of disposable cups and food containers to those items you intend to carry out of the Dining Hall. Always use glass/dishware when eating in the Dining Hall.
